The TRAVELING BOXCAR arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 12, 2004.
Here, Jeff gives us some terrific night shots around his layout.

Here is how he did it!

Camera: Nikon D1; Lens: 28-200 Nikkor D; no flash/available light, Bogen tripod.  D1 set on TIFF RGB for images about 7.2M.  Then PhotoShopped up a bit and "saved for web" (nobody wants a 7M photo in their dial up e-mail!).

Having left Norm's layout, the boxcar, pulled by the Gas Turbine
Union Pacific 73, arrives late at night in Salt Lake City, passing some
Walther's oil pumps and Lionel's industrial tanks, Walther's oil storage
tanks in the background.  The train passes a line of Atlas 33,000 gal.
Technical Propellant tank cars. The boxcar arrives and drops off the
photographic equipment necessary to photo and disguise my very much under
construction layout.  4 sec at f/11, 75mm focal length, 12 volt AC light
bulbs, white balance set for incandescent.

Moving slowing into the yard for an overnight stop and
offloading the photo gear.  Atlas Purina boxcar and 33,000 tank cars.  4
sec at f/11, 36mm focal length, 12 volt AC light bulbs, white balance set
for incandescent.

Early morning yard work, and the sun is up early in the West.
The boxcar's taken on a load of boxed Morton Salt from the Great Salt
Lake ready for retail and headed East.  Backing onto a siding for 2 Atlas
SDP-35s to pull ahead for the trip East.  4 sec. at f/22, 200mm focal
length, available sunlight.

That's a Baldwin VO-1000 pushing the boxcar back into the siding.
Next door is some UP steam waiting for the SDP-35s to pull ahead and get
the boxes of salt on their way.  5 sec. at f/22, 200mm focal length,
available sunlight.

Jeff now sends the TRAVELING BOXCAR on to Chris Barany (Lehigh Valley Railroad),
where Chris will sponser the Boxcar at the Somerset 4H meeting of the "Trainmasters"!
