OBITUARY OF M.R. McMURRY, VINITA, OKLAHOMA
On 1 October 1930, Vinita received the sad news of the passing of one of her best known Citizens, Mr. M.R. McMurry. As was his wont, with his devoted wife, he spent the summer at Long Beach, California and was about ready to return to Vinita. While on his way to consult a doctor in Long Beach, the final summons came.
Tennessee gave this man birth, 5 November 1871, his parents being Newton and Elizabeth (Gordon)McMurry, sturdy Scotch-Irish pioneers. When he was fourteen years of age, the family moved to Reno County, Kansas and engaged in farming. Five years of the time spent in Kansas Mr. McMurry was a builder and contractor in Hutchinson. March 14, 1896 he married Mabel O. Freeman at Hutchinson and she with three brothers and one sister survive him. Two of the brothers live near Hutchinson, one lives in Texas and the sister lives at Yoder, Kansas.
Mr. and Mrs. McMurry moved to Vinita, Oklahoma in January 1911 where he engaged in the wholesale hay business for about ten years, quitting business to enjoy life more to his liking in the open field and along silver streams.
His was more than an ordinary character. Mediocrity, he knew not for whether in business, at a game or in the realm of sport, he was always a success. Patient, thorough and careful, in his quiet way he mastered his many undertakings.
He loved nature. The great outdoors made a strong appeal to a soul attuned to the harmony of the brook, the song of the bird and the whispering of the trees. Nature left her imprint upon this man as shown in his sterling honesty, his rugged character, his friendship and his many friends.
His many Long Beach friends will miss his coming and going, Hutchinson will miss his friendly visits but Vinita feels the loss of a splendid citizen, a good sportsman and a true friend.

David B. McMurray, b. 30 Dec 1844 TN, d. 16 March 1920. Soldier in Civil War. Never married. Dropped the Mc from his name and went by David B. Murray. The following obituary was taken from a newspaper of Hot Springs, South Dakota and sent by a niece, Emma Garner of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, record 146 41, Part II
It is with deep regret that the Star chronicles the death of David B. Murray, which occurred Tuesday evening, 16 March 1920 at the State Soldiers Home, where Mr. Murray had spent the last thirteen years of his life. During that time he had become very well known and liked by Hot Springs people and because of his deep interest in the public schools was considered a personal friend by every child and young person in the town.
Mr. Murray's great hobby was books; besides being a great reader and along the lines of history a deep student. He was anxious to do everything in his power to help young people to form such tastes. He made the schools the basis for his work and during the years of his life here he had donated no less than thirteen hundred volumes to the public school library. These are all works of the best literature and form a wonderful memorial to their donor's generosity and public spirit. He visited the high school regularly every Wednesday, always bringing with him at least one good book and usually giving a talk to the pupils concerning the volume or volumes. He also subscribed for several high grade magazines for the school and had framed and hung in the high school auditorium pictures of all the presidents of the United States, with a framed biography of each.
Mr. Murray's interest extended to the rural schools and about two years ago he presented a framed copy of Lincoln's Gettysburg address to each rural school in the county. His familiarity with the history of the Battle of Gettysburg was complete down to the minutest detail, and indeed his knowledge of the history of the whole Civil War was amazing in it comprehensiveness. Abraham Lincoln's life was sacred history to him and two entire shelves in the school library are filled with all the authentic biographies of Lincoln which Mr. Murray could collect.
Although he has become so well known during his life in this town, the details of his earlier life can be but meagerly given. He was born in Tennessee and enlisted in the 3rd Missouri Cavalry, Co. E., 12 Oct 1861 and was discharged at New Orleans 27 July 1865. He spent some years of his life as a school teacher but worked chiefly at his trade of carpenter. After making his home in Rapid City for a number of years he came to the State Home in 1907, remaining here until the time of his death. His last illness was brief, a heavy cold developing into pneumonia.
A sister of Mr. Murray lives at Drakeville, Iowa. One other sister and brother survive but their residence is not known.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at the
Methodist
Church and burial will be at the State Home Cemetery. The high school
will
be closed for the morning in order to give the pupils an opportunity to
attend. Flags on both school buildings were at half-mast Tuesday.
The following are a few lines taken from a letter David B. Murray wrote to his niece Hazel Bayne, record 146 85, Part II, 10 Oct 1918.
Our parents were Robert Montgomery McMurray and Martha Miller. As I remember grandfather and father had the name Robert. Grandmother's maiden name was Montgomery, of the same Scotch-Irish family as General Montgomery, who was killed on Abraham Heights at Quebec. It was a family fad to give one boy a given name, Montgomery, in every generation. Brother Bill also had Montgomery in his name.
Our grandparents came from the Carolinas, North and South, to Tennessee with the first settlers in the wilderness of that unexplored country.
McMurrays settled near where the town of Murfreesboro now stands. At one time grandfather owned part of the land on which the battle of Murfreesboro or Stone River was fought. Before the War of the Rebellion he moved to near Brownsville in West Tennessee, where he died in 1857.
Grandfather Miller settled in Marshal County about 15 or 20 miles west of Columbia, Tennessee. The counties were not named when they settled there. Grandfather Miller moved to Iowa in 1847 and from that time made their home there.

William Harvey McMurry, son of Robert and Mary (Montgomery) McMurry, b. 8 April 1823, d. 10 Oct 1903, m. 4 Dec 1845 Martha Jane Faires, b. 3 Aug 1823 in Alabama. Moved with her parents to Haywood County when three years of age, d. 15 April 1907. Both buried in Fairview Cemetery, south of Hutchinson, KS
William (Billy) H. McMurry was reared on a farm in eastern Tennessee and when still a boy moved with his parents to Haywood County, in the same state, where he later married. He bought a tract of "Congress land" at one dollar and twenty five cents an acre, later he sold that farm and bought a larger one, on which the family lived until 1873. He, with two of his Tennessee neighbors, James A. Moore and H.D. Freeman came to Kansas on a prospecting tour. W.H. McMurry bought a full section of railroad land in Lincoln Township, Reno County. There was cheaper land to be obtained but Mr. McMurry was looking for fertility and a good supply of water. He arranged for the erection of a house on his land and returned to Tennessee. In the fall of 1873 he moved his family to Kansas. W.H. McMurry was a Union man during the time of the Civil War and a Republican ever after. He became a substantial farmer and an extensive dealer in hogs, taking a good deal of pride in the high grade of hogs that he raised. He and his wife were members of the Methodist Church and took an earnest and influential part in all good works in their neighborhood. (From History of Reno County)
They were parents of seven children as follows: James Franklin, Harriet, Elizabeth Jane, Susan Frances, Hugh L., William E. Charles W. All part of "The Tennessee Colony."

James Franklin, first child of Wm. H. And Martha (Faires) McMurry, was born near Brownsville, Haywood County, TN. His education was in the subscription schools of that era, the public school system not yet inaugurated. When twenty one years of age he began to teach in the public schools during the winter months and farmed during the summer months. This he did for ten years. He was married to Ann Mariah Thomas 2 Dec 1869. In 1884 he followed his father's example and came to Kansas, locating near his father in Lincoln Township, Reno County. For six years he rented farms, then in 1891, he bought a quarter section of land in the township. In addition to general farming he
became interested in the dairy business. Several times he served the Republican party as a precinct committeeman. From 1904 to 1908, he served as a member of the board of county commissioners and was widely and favorably known throughout the county. "Uncle Franklin and Aunt Ann" took an active part in the Methodist Church at Elmer.
Seven children were born to this union: Edgar Lee, Guy T., Lulu Jane, Ernest and Pearl, Twins, Linnie Kate, Hugh.

The grandparents, "Uncle Franklin and Aunt Ann" as they were affectionately called in the community, raised the children. Four children: Lloyd, Opal, Ralph, Ray.
The following poem written to Lulu by her cousin Tennie (Stewart) McIver.
I used to envy her
Her quick and ready skill,
She could do any kind of work,
Went at it with a will
I could only poke along
Admiring her deft hand;
What was to me hard digging
Was to her like sifting sand.
She could wash and clean and sew
And best of all could cook;
Few girls like her you'll find
Though long and well you look.
She seemed to know by instinct
What was hard for me to learn;
She'd have a job all finished
While I wondered where to turn.
Sometimes when I have been
"Laid up" for many days,
I've wished for some one like her
(Now that's not idle praise.)
But "each to his small corner,"
I've tried to do my best,
I've not always liked my corner
But I think I've stood the test.
She may have had some faults,
Oh yes! She could get riled!
But her temper never smouldered
When she was mad she 'biled.'
And she didn't 'bile' right often
Nor without some fair excuse;
And I've heard without some temper
We'd be mighty little use.
If ever I'm in trouble
I'd like to have her by my side,
I know she'd do her level best
Whatever might betide.

RECOLLECTIONS OF MARY HARRIET McMURRY STEWART
U>
I was born near Brownsville, TN, Haywood County, April 30, 1848. The mug with the inscription "For Attendance at School" was given to me by my Aunt Elizabeth Hon, my father's sister. I was five years of age at that time but had never been to school. My first home was a 40 acre place and I lived there 'till I was ten years of age.
What schooling I had was reading, writing and spelling and very little of that. I went to a log school house with one log sawed out for a window; a desk along the side of the building was where the pupils did their writing. It had backless seats and just a board for a desk. Mangrum Freeman, brother of Henry D. Freeman, was my first teacher. We moved to a 60 acre place and I lived there 'till I married. The breast pin I wear was given to me by my father when I was 16 years of age. It cost $9.00.
Up until I was married I spun and wove the cloth for my clothing. We made home spun dresses and they were our Sunday's. Most of our clothing was home spun. We made cloth for sheets, pillow cases and table cloths. One pattern, Lady Diamond, made beautiful table cloths . . . was made in small diamonds. Also, we made plain cloth for table cloths. Most girls spun and wove their fancy work. Some few did embroidery work. I wove one blue and white bedspread and some white ones . . . put 3 widths of yard-wide cloth in them. We could only weave a yard-wide on our loom. We spun our thread for sewing and quilting.
The old spinning wheel I have was made by Uncle Alex Moore (Uncle Jim Moor's father).
Our way of helping people who needed assistance was to spin so much thread for them to make cloth - especially after they were burned out.
I was married when I was 18 years old, November 19, 1866, to Daniel Martin Stewart, at father's house by Rev. Kirkman. My wedding dress was purple cashmere all wool (one dollar a yard) made with full skirt and plain waist
with belt made in. It was trimmed in brown ribbon about ½ inch in width. My brown kid gloves cost $2.00 - the only ones I ever had. I wore just common black shoes. Bridal party: Lizzie Moore and James Franklin McMurry, Martha Hon and Tom McMurry. Guests at our wedding were Elizabeth McMurry (maiden lady) and Uncle Bob Stewart.
We lived with father for two years then we moved to a place of our own about 4 miles from my folks 60 acre place.
My father's name was Wm. H. McMurry and he was born in North Carolina (probably Murfreesboro, TN). Mother's name was Martha Jane Faires McMurry and she was born in Alabama. My brothers and sisters - James Franklin, Elizabeth Jane, Susan Frances, Hugh Lafayette, Will Eli and Charles. Hugh Lafayette died October 3, 1876, with Typhoid fever. All are gone but myself, Jane and Charles.
Going to Grandma Faires's was a treat. She let us do as we pleased. We did lots of things we weren't allowed to at home.
We sold out and started for Kansas March 17, 1873 from Brownsville, TN. We arrived at St. Louis and remained there 36 hours on account of a strike. They could not get any one to run the train. Finally one fellow said he would if he could have some officers along. We started out and reached a bridge and stopped. Shortly thereafter the officers came on the train with 2 men handcuffed. They had found them under the bridge. We never learned what became of the affair.
We started on again and everything went fine. We arrived in Hutchinson March 23, 1873, and stayed there until July 16, when we moved 7 miles south of town on our 80 acre farm and I have been here ever since.
The party who came to Kansas when we did were J.A. Moore and family - Elisabeth, James C., Mary Ann, Will D., Louisa, Dica and Barcie. Uncle Jackson McMurry and 3 sons - Thomas, Lafayette and Cousin Henry D. Freeman.
I had three children born in Tennessee - Martha Isabel, Mary Jane and Alcy Calvin. Alcy was fifteen months old at the time we moved. My other children born in Kansas were Tennessee Frances, Albert Andrew, Walter Judson, Dica Ellen, James William and Martin Luther.
Mart, my husband, passed away May 18, 1911. Mary Jane, Albert, Judson and Tennie are all gone.
Grandchildren - 17 living, 6 gone. Great grandchildren - 22 and 1 gone.
After coming to Kansas I lost my thimble and I had nothing to get another one with.
We had company come one day - the children had taken all the teaspoons to school and we had to put sugar in the coffee with a tablespoon. Mrs. Hull was our guest. She was the wife and an M.E. preacher. I joined the Chestnut Grove M.E. Church in Tennessee when I was about 15 years of age. After coming to Kansas, I joined the Harmony Baptist Church in 1876. Rev. Fryear was pastor. My home was open to our pastors for entertainment. The names of some of the ministers whom I entertained - Fryear, T.J. Neal, J.G. Smiley, W.S. Cook, T.T. Moore, Eli Looney, G.C. Owens, Rev. Worthy Cameron, John J. Via and G. T. Phillips. The Cook family stayed 4 or 5 weeks with us. Lucile, Harold, and Paul wer the children's names.
A cyclone went through our neighborhood June 10, 1876. Children had just gotten home from school. The school house blew away. It was made of stone. The chimney blew off our house but there was no other damage to speak of. My parents house ½ mile north had the south side blown out. We could see the stairway from our house. None of the immediate family was hurt. Mr. U.G. Williams lost a son in the storm. A boy named White was badly hurt but recovered. They lived on what we know best as Frank McMurry's place north of Fairview Cemetery.
Mrs. Nellie Nelson, another good neighbor, lived ½ mile south - mother of John and Pete.
We went to church at Lincoln and Excelsior school
houses
before the Harmony Church was built. There have been many changes in
many
ways since we came to Kansas. We have had our sorrows and our joys but

SUNFLOWERS
Oh, sunflowers, Kansas sunflowers!
That like true warriors, bold
Went scouting for the pioneers -
And wrought them trails of Gold!
'Twas you that taught the sturdy men
That first broke Kansas sod
To turn them from the shadows -
And keep their face toward God.
So well I love your glowing faces,
No other flower so dear;
And oft I say this little prayer
As heaven seems drawing near;
"Dear God, if in the Garden by
The 'Mansions Fair' there's room,
Please make one little corner bright
with 'Kansas Sunflower' bloom."
AN OZARK ROAD
My memory holds a road that winds
Amongst the sun-kissed hills,
And every now and then must cross
A brook that laughs and trills;
If I might wander where it leads -
A year - perchance a day,
Oh would I find what vain I've sought
On many a noisy way?
I've found the things that once I deemed
The end and aim of life,
But love, and wealth, and all the rest
Have brought me naught but strife;
But, lovely little road, if now
To you I could be sent -
Along your shadowed reach me thinks -
I'd find the prize - Content.

MY WINTER SUNBEAM
Written by Tennie for her daughter, Flo.
You came to me mid winter's storms
A ray of sunshine bright,
Through all like storms since then
You've shone a glad and joyous light.
As yet no troubles cloud your sky,
Your life is free from care,
That God may keep you from all ill
Is Mother's constant prayer.
But when someday the trials come -
And come indeed they will,
My earnest hop is that you keep
Your sunny spirit still.
No lasting evil can befall
If in God's love you trust,
So trust him still when troubles come -
As come to all they must.

Elizabeth Jane McMurry, daughter of William Harvey and Martha Jane (Faires) McMurry, b. 6 May 1852 near Brownsville, TN, m. 24 Dec 1874 James C. Moore, b. 27 April 1848, d. 7 April 1939. One daughter: Ethel. Record also found under 148 17, Part I.
Mary Permelah (Montgomery), wife of Robert McMurry, was a great Aunt of James C. Moore and grandmother of Elizabeth Jane McMurry.
Some memories of Aunt Jane Moore, written by her in April 1943, before she passed away in June, 91 years of age.
One of my first memories was of my father carrying me in his arms across the yard. Another of my grandfather, Robert McMurry coming to our house. He only lived a short distance. He had two little dogs, one with curly yellow hair the other black and white spotted. Pick was his name, the yellow one was Shag. When he started home he took his cane and called Pick and Shag to go. Then later - but not long after, of my mother taking me to see him on his death bed. He had Erysipelas on his hand caused by running an oat stubble in it. He lived near a rich slave holder that was not good to his slaves.
A little later we moved to another place a few miles distant. There I went to my first school. Did not have much schooling, no free schools then. A man with two or three children would take turns if all could not go at once. Miss Tally taught the school. Harriet and I both went. That is the only school that I remember Harriet and I going together. One funny incident, cattle and hogs run out in the woods and the dogwood trees were in bloom and very pretty. One morning we stopped to get blossoms. We set our dinner basket down to get flowers and an old sow stuck her snoot in our basket and ran off with our bottle of milk and left the other things, I wished she would die from the glass but never heard from her after, if she came to any harm.
Other teachers were Billy Richardson, Jim Picks, Mr. Wiles, and the last was Henry Freemans sister, Mrs. Cogswell.
I had several spells of bad sickness. Diptheria, in bad form and what they called then bloody flux. Before this I had Erysipelas on my face.
I remember the big comet and total eclipse of the sun in about 1855 or 1859. Then came the Civil War. I remember a good deal of that. The Guerilla band did a lot of mischief, burnt cotton and sometimes houses. Took horses and provisions as they pleased but they never stopped at our house. My father was drafted and got ready to go but for some cause the draft was never called. All food and dry goods were scarce and high priced. We used rye as a substitute for coffee.
November 1873 we came to Kansas. On the way from Tuesday till Friday. We came as immigrants on an immigrant train. Not much accomodations but not crowded. The train was ferried across the river at Atchison. In 1874 was the grasshopper year and we saw hard times for several years. Jim and I were married December 14, 1874 and lived on a farm one mile west and one mile north of Yoder, for about thirty years. We both joined the Methodist Church in our early teens. The Baptist organized a Church at Excelsior School House and we attended there. We thought it over or Jim more especially did for he always took the lead in Church affairs and I followed and was always sure he would be right. We both felt that immersion was the unquestionable mode of baptism so joined the Harmony Baptist Church and was baptized by A.N. Post, don't remember what year.
When we left the farm we went to McMinnville, Oregon for two and a half years. Returned in 1903 think it was and moved to Hutchinson in 1904. Went to Portland, Oregon in 1905 to the Lewis and Clark Exposition. In 1906 we went to Corpus Christi, TX. Was gone six months. That ended our running around. In March of 1907 we moed to this place, 426 East 4th Street, Hutchinson, KS.

My father had very poor eyesight on account of an accident when he was 18 years old. He wanted to give up horse shoeing in Haven, Kansas so he went to south Texas and got work in the summer of 1907, returning to Kansas for his family in March of 1908. We lived out from Blessing, Texas on the banks of a little river where my father worked at a pumping plant, pumping water for rice irrigation. After that season, we moved nearer to town. My mother talked much about her family and I know she must have been very homesick.
Uncle Jim Moore came down to see us in the summer of 1909, some months before we moved to Bay City. While we were still out in the country there was a terrible hurrricane, our first experience with such. It came in July of 1909 and did much damage in Bay City which we could see after moving there. Sometime during that summer, Floyd, my brother became very ill and the Doctor finally diagnosed it as Infantile Paralysis - now called Polio. By moving to Bay City better Doctors were available.
My mother talked much about her grandmother, she was very sad when word came of Martha McMurry's death.
Tennie Stewart (chart no. 148 24) and Lulu McMurry (148 13) were about the same age as my mother and they were very close while growing up. They often spent time together with Uncle Jim and Aunt Jane Moore. After we moved to Texas and Lulu married William Uhl and moved to Montana the three girls and Aunt Jane started a Round Robin Letter. I remember reading some of the letters after I was in school.
They were always full of family news. After Tennie's death there was a break for some time before the Letter started again. My mother always looked forward to the letters. They stopped after her death.
I was in Hutchinson about the time of Aunt Jane's poor health and remained until after her death. We cousins decided to revitalize the Round Robin, with daughters, granddaughters, nieces and other relatives of the three who had started the original Round Robin. It is still going the rounds.
My parents were both faithful workers in the
Methodist
Church in Bay City, both singing in the choir for years.

George Dewitt writes the following about his parents, in addition to what his sister Merle wrote.
My parents lived in Bay City, Texas until 1913 or 1914, then moved to Collegeport, Texas and did custom plowing for rice farmers, them moved to Beadle, Texas and operated a steam pumping plant for irrigation for rice. They returned to Bay City in the fall of 1917 and my father worked in a garage for a few years. He and ten other men pooled about $10,000 and formed "The Bay City Machine Company", a stock company, and opened for business at 1917 Ave. F. Street.
Shortly after opening the business and things going good, my father began to buy up the stock from the other stock holders until he became the sole owner of the business.
Business was good and by spring of 1922 more room was needed, so he moved to a larger building at 1616 Seventh St. where it has been located ever since.
My mother died on 23 Dec 1932, which left Dad, Floyd and I alone at home. We managed real well, dividing our household duties bewetween us until I married in January 1934.
Later that year my father married a widow that had been nursing my mother during her illness. Her name was Mrs. Dorothy (McCain) Doyle. They were very happy and constant companions until her death in 1945.
In the spring of 1942, Dad leased the buisness to me and retired on his lease money. By 1943 the country was at war and had taken all available help for defense purposes, so he came back to the shop and worked for me. This gave him lease money besides his salary. It also gave him something to do because time was heavy on his hands. He retired again after the war was over and help available.
He married again in 1950 to Mrs. Lee Curry. They separated a month later by mutual agreeement and a divorce followed. Because of lonesomeness and wanting something to do to pass time he came back to the shop and kept books for me for a while.
He passed away on 24 of May 1961, after residing in a nursing home for about three years. Internment was at Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City, TX. After his death we put suitable markers on the plot, which included his two sons that were first buried near Blessing, TX.

Sarah Jane Allen, daughter of Alfred and Susan Frances (McMurry Overton) Allen, b. 9 Feb 1886 Reno County, KS, m. 20 July 1921 William Allen Belcher, Methodist Minister, b. 15 March 1880, d. 5 Sept 1951.
One daughter: Martha Frances.
A few memories and incidents in the life of Susan Frances (McMurry) Allen, as recalled by her second child, Sarah (Sadie) Jane Allen Belcher. Sadie was only seven years old when her mother died so these are childhood memories that left a deep impression on her mind and have remained through the years.
"I have clear memories that impressed me with my mother's character and personality and I remember clearly what she looked like. She was of slender build as most of the McMurrys were and not very tall. I remember some of her dresses, particularly two black and white checked or plaid gingham, patterns that we don't see now. Some of the incidents that impressed as to her character and personality probably happened when I was still younger. She began instructing her children at an early age on right and wrong. One rainy Sunday when we had not gone to church, my older brother and I were cutting paper with scissors, when my mother discovered us she told us never to use scissors on Sunday.
She was very religious, a devout Christian. One recollection was a time of a revival meeting at the Methodist Church at Elmer, an invitation was given to Christians to kneel at the altar for a time of prayer, I remember my mother arising one night and shouting as she returned to her seat. Shouting was hard quite often but it was the only time I recall hearing my mother.
We attended Sunday School and Church regularly. We rode the three miles in a farm wagon. Later my father bought what was called a spring wagon. Sometimes as we rode along my father and mother sang hymns. Three I remember that she expecially like were "Is Not This the Land of Beulah, Blessed Land of Light", "In the Morning, In the Morning, We will Gather with the Faithful", "Will Your Anchor Hold in the Storms of Life". This last song was sung at her funeral service, which was held in the Harmony Baptist Church, the Methodist Church, was being redecorated inside."

A TRIBUTE
Written in memory of Uncle Will McMurry
"There'll be no shadows",
Oh hear that high, clear Voice;
He sings as one of God's own saints
Who run and do rejoice
"There'll be no shadows
On the other side"
And on his face the look of those
Whose souls in peace abide.
"Jesus is the sunshine
Of that land so fair"
He seems to look beyond the Vail
And ken the Glories there.
"Sin and death can never" -
Triumphant now, and clear
And as he sings it seems almost
That angels hover near.
Oft' have I thought that any pain
However Hard to bear
Would easier be if through it I
That well loved Voice might hear.
When in the land of light and song
I dwell among the blest,
I hope to hear that strong sweet Voice
Ring high above the rest.

Charles W. McMurry, born to William H. and Martha (Faires) McMurry, 16 July 1867, Brownsville, TN, m. 29 Dec 1892 Stella (Churchill) Shepard, daughter of Harriet Churchill and Joel Lynn Shepard, b. 18 July 1869, d. 10 Oct 1964.
Charles was always very much interested in the changes coming in the beginning of the 20th Century. Being fascinated by the then growing telephone industry, he sold his farm and bough the telephone exchange in Turon, about thirty five miles Southwest of Hutchinson. The family lived in Turon for a period of years while he built up the exchange. In about 1910, he sold the exchange and moved back to a farm south of his father's place.
They retired from farming in 1923 and moved to Hutchinson. They built their home at 116 East Ninth, where thy lived until 1958, moving to a Rest Home at Kinsley, KS. He passed away 18 April 1959. They were members of the First Methodist Church, Hutchinson, KS.
Interesting parts taken from a story of early Kansas life as written by Charles McMurry. He was six years of age when he came to Kansas and eighty-four years old at the time he wrote of his experiences.
Three families came to Kansas together from Brownsville, TN. H.D. Freeman, T.J. McMurry and Wm. H. McMurry, a total of twenty-one people. All of the relatives and neighbors came to see us off to the far away western country. We left Brownsville in the afternoon over the Louisville and Nashville railroad. The first change of trains was at St. Louis, crossing the Mississippi River, the train being moved onto a ferry boat, since there were no bridges at that date. From St. Louis to Atchison, KS, crossing the Missouri River by ferry. Then to Hutchinson by Santa Fe railroad. (Several months before, H.D. Freeman, James A. Moore and Wm. H. McMurry came on a prospecting tour and bought land.)
Every other section of land, the odd numbered sections, for eleven or twelve miles north and south of the Santa Fe railroad were given to the railroad as an in incentive to get the railroad built through the new country.
Hutchinson was platted in 1871 and the railroad built in 1872. The land taken by our families was bought from the railroad, as the government land had all been homesteaded by other people, mostly Union Soldiers. The price paid for the land was about $2.50 an acre, with several years to pay.
Crops were so poor father could not hold all of his land so he sold the northwest one-fourth. Grasshoppers were causing people to leave who were able to get away, but those that had the grit to stay or had nothing and no place to go, stayed on and finally won out and had good homes, even better than we left in Tennessee.
The year 1876 was a very hard year for my father's family. June tenth of that year a cyclone laid the south side of our house down without cracking but one window. The Seth Thomas clock landed upside down on the floor, but ran as good as ever when set up and the pendulum in place. This same clock is on a shelf in my home and still running. My brothers, Will and Hugh and my mother took typhoid fever that year. Hugh died third of October. In those early days there were no funeral directors. Someone in the neighborhood took charge, a casket was bought or built by a cabinet maker and the corpse taken to the cemetery in a wagon or spring wagon.
After arriving in Reno county, people lost no time getting trees started. They found there were thousands of little cottonwoods growing along the river, started from seeds that had been washed down the river. Soon there were trees on every farm. People brought peach and other fruit seed with them. When going to town we could see one big tree on the river southeast of town and there were many a longing look at that tree, which no doubt encouraged folks to plant trees as they missed the big trees back in Tennessee. We could also see the sand hills north of town and people soon learned to go there to gather wild plums in the summer. The only thing growing on the sand hills at that time was the plum bushes.
When out at night one could see the lights wherever a family lived, either candle or coal oil (kerosene) lights. There were three ways of transportation in those days, by wagon, horseback and walking. Mostly walking. Few families had more than two horses and after working all day the horses had to rest, so we walked to meetings, spelling schools and other gatherings.
In those days the community life consisted of church meetings in school houses of nights and Sundays, also spelling schools and literary societies. Families would go to church on Sundays and go home with a neighbor family for dinner. Also, in slack times of work a family got in their wagon and drove to a neighbors and as there were no telephones, announce their coming as soon as they go there for the day. Chickens were run down, pies and cakes put in the oven and everyone had a good time.
Our post office was Hutchinson and we got our mail once a week, delivered by some neighbor going to town and bringing all the near neighbors mail. We had the Toledo Blade and St. Louis Democrat, published once a week. For other reading we had the Bible, Sunday School papers and the Youth Companion.
About the first things noticed as to wild life was the prairie dog towns. They would cover two or three acres. They were holes in the ground inhabited by prairie dogs, owls and rattlesnakes.
Prairie chickens were here in abundance. Wild geese were here by the thousands in the spring and fall, also the white brants, there were more of them than the grey geese. They made great sport for the hunters but weren't fit to eat. The grey geese were fine for eating. I can't recall having seen a live buffalo on the prairie but at a fourth of July celebration at Castleton in 1874 a lone buffalo was sighted and men got on their hoses and gave chase, overtaking it about a mile from our home and killing it.
I don't remember any Indian scares in our part of the country but south and southwest of us they had scares and the folks came to Hutchinson for protection in case an Indian raid did develop. Often bands of friendly Indians came through the country begging.
I remember my first ride in a buggy. I started walking to my sister, Harriet Stewart's home, when Dr. McKee came along, going to see a patient, he had me get in and ride. That was something to brag about to the rest of the family.
In a few years the Harmony Baptist Church was built about two and three-fourth miles south east of us and some years later the Elmer Methodist Church was built about the same distance northeast of us. We always enjoyed going to both of these Churches.
I have often heard old people in my youth wish for the good old times of long ago, I could not understand why those times were any better than the times we were having, but now in going over and thinking about the time when I was young, I am almost ready to join them in their wish, but why not look at our times now and enjoy them and be satisfied.
